The Center for Building Hope is a non-profit organization that provides free psychological, social and educational services for cancer patients, their loved ones and caregivers. With professionally-led support groups and educational workshops, people impacted by cancer learn vital skills to restore hope, regardless of the stage of their disease.
Free programs include: support group for cancer patients, families of patients and caregivers, programs for children, networking groups, individual counseling, workshops with physicians, and other experts, exercise programs and nutritional programs. We recently affiliated with the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General, Harvard's largest teaching hospital and a world leader in the study, advancement, and clinical practice of mind/body medicine. The Center for Building Hope continues to partner with world-class health providers. These partnerships offer education and research opportunities to better support not only our participants, but to cancer patients, their families and caregivers in every corner of the United States.
In October 2010, The Center for Building Hope opened the only Gold LEED green healthcare facility in Southwest Florida. The state of the art campus is located in Lakewood Ranch and serves Sarasota, Manatee and surrounding counties. Green Business Partner Carlson Studio Architure designed the facility. The building is constructed from the most eco-friendly materials -- there are no harmful chemicals in the paint, wood, concrete, adhesives, sealants, etc. This produces a healthy environment for participants with compromised immunity. The building has numerous energy and water-saving features including generous natural lighting, room lighting sensors and self-dimming lights, compact fluorescent lights, low-flow sinks, and low-flow restroom facilities. As a matter of fact, the lavatory sinks have 0.5 gal/min aerators and the toilets and urinals are 1.1 gal/flush, lower than program standards. The facility has hydration stations and large recycling kiosks, encouraging further recycling participation by patients, guests and visitors. The facility is situated on a parcel of land located on a nature preserve and overlooks a beautiful vista of natural scenery and wildlife. The Center for Building Hope has intertwined green measures with health, wellness and comfort of their visitors in mind.
